An Evening of Laughter, Adventure, and Authentic Family Moments

When Cindy reached out about photographing her extended family during their summer vacation in Woodstock, Vermont, I was absolutely thrilled. She envisioned a two-hour session that blended documentary family photography with artistic, fine art portraits—a chance to capture her parents, siblings, and five energetic children naturally interacting rather than simply posing for the camera. These are the kinds of sessions I love most because they leave room for genuine connection, authentic emotion, and the creative freedom to follow whatever unfolds.

As the evening light softened and we waited for the sun to drop a little lower over the Vermont landscape, I pulled an old wedding veil from my camera bag and handed it to the girls with one simple instruction: have fun. What happened next couldn't have been planned. Laughter echoed through the meadow as they danced, twirled, ran, and disappeared beneath the flowing fabric, creating moments that were joyful, spontaneous, and beautifully real. The Boys Join the Adventure

One of my favorite parts of this extended family photography session in Woodstock, Vermont was simply stepping back and letting the children lead the way. As soon as they spotted their grandparents waiting in the field, they took off running with huge smiles, racing across the grass before throwing themselves into welcoming hugs. The Everyone Look This Way Part (Sort Of)

Every family wants at least a few photographs where everyone is together, looking at the camera and smiling—and we absolutely made time for those. We captured portraits of each individual family, the grandparents with their grandchildren, and the entire extended family together. These classic images become treasured keepsakes, hanging on walls and filling family albums for generations.

Of course, we didn't stop there. Between the "everyone look this way" moments came the laughter, the playful teasing, the bear hugs, and the inevitable chaos that happens when cousins are together. Those unscripted moments often become everyone's favorites because they reflect the true personality of a family. Cooling Off by the Water

As the evening grew warmer, we wandered down to a cool woodland stream where the shade offered a welcome escape from the summer heat. This change of scenery brought an entirely different feel to the session, with soft filtered light, sparkling water, and endless opportunities for natural, unscripted moments. While the children splashed, skipped stones, and searched for tiny treasures along the water's edge, I quietly documented the laughter and curiosity that make childhood so magical.

The stream also became the perfect backdrop for a few more intimate family portraits and romantic moments between parents who rarely have the chance to step away and simply enjoy one another. Nearby, an ancient weathered tree became an irresistible playground, inspiring adventurous portraits and a touch of cinematic storytelling that perfectly complemented the meadow images from earlier in the evening. One Last Dance Before Sunset

As the boys wandered back toward the house, the girls lingered by the stream, completely content to dance, twirl, and explore the last golden moments of the day. With the evening growing quieter and the light becoming softer by the minute, it felt like the perfect opportunity to slow things down and create something a little different.

After capturing the documentary moments, playful family portraits, and timeless images throughout the evening, I decided to embrace a more artistic approach. By intentionally introducing movement and a touch of blur, these final photographs became less about documenting exactly what happened and more about preserving how the evening felt. The flowing dresses, dancing silhouettes, and soft motion transformed the last few minutes into something almost dreamlike—a magical ending to an unforgettable family session in Woodstock, Vermont.
